"End of a Good Morning at Bear Lake"

Plein Air Oil on Linen Canvas

Image Size 12 x 24

I painted this during the Plein Air Rockies event, entered it as one of my paintings, and it sold the day of the opening, even before the reception began! That is always great news. I had done a watercolor from this vantage point last year, and I wanted to try a large oil (this was large for me to paint outdoors). I got rained on twice during the painting, which took over four hours to complete, but it was worth it. I got the morning light's cast shadows on the mountain first, because I knew they would change quickly. Also, I got the reflections in the water as soon as I could, and it's lucky that I did because the wind came up. The second rain did me in, but it was worth it to carry a very wet, stretched canvas upside down for about 1/2 mile in the rain to my car. What we go through painting plein air!
